In the final days of the ancient snake,
you spend your time on riverbeds alone.
And in an old oak with roots exposed,
you find a small keyhole.
And seven dead bodies litter the ground,
with eyes gone pale and white.
And you’re not quite sure what you’ve done
but your bloody hands curl tightly around the key.
Now she tells me about a fucking world that I ain’t never seen.
But I have to watch myself because it’s her fucking dream.
And when I see her standing up I have to remember to
Watch my fucking head.

He peels up his lids and rolls his eyes
until he’s staring at the roof of his skull
and the vast space is covered with galaxies,
star upon star, filled with small planets
and countless little eyes stare back down at him
begging and pleading for his help.
Every small point of light is a million eyes
That call him lord.
Lord of the night eye.
The creature that eats itself.
Killed off his kind.
Broke down his home.
Left her alone.
And he can’t even help one.
Can’t even help one.
He’s just an observer.
A man with lids peeled back.
Watching the universe die.
All within the blink of his massive eye.

Part IV – In the Desert
05:13
|
|||
(Lyrics from the Stephen Crane poem “In the Desert”)
In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter—bitter,” he answered;
“But I like it
“Because it is bitter,
“And because it is my heart.”

Nothing changes, dune after dune.
Until finally I find a small body
half buried in sand.
A young girl who tells me
she’s out here looking to die.
And she tells me she has
died a million times before.
So I wipe the sand from her face
and she asks me if she can come along.
Well I guess I could stay with you a little longer
And together will both be stronger.
But I know in the end I’ll still have to go.
And taking her was my mistake.
But if I had to do it all over again
I’d do the same damn thing.

And his vision goes black
and opens on to a new scene.
A young man pours libations
and calls his ancient name
When he opens his mouth to answer
he can only
lisp and slur
which sends spittle flying.
And each drop of saliva
changes shape
they morph into a host of animals
and surround the young man.
The lion stands for pride.
The owl holds a nightly vigil.
And the wolf delivers death.
But one young man calls the snake.

And she puts her small hand in mine
to deliver her final warning.
“Beware the snake,
he always takes half of what he gives.”

Part VIII – The Snake
09:03
|
|||
Now the earth trembles
and the dunes collapse.
With every passing second
I’m getting closer to you.
And my spine pops.
My retinas burn.
As I find my way
into the light.
I heard your voice
and the songs you sang.
So I’ll answer your call
to get what is mine.
For I am the snake.
I am inside and outside
and I am everything
you fear.

When I look into your eyes
I can see you’ve done this
many times before.
If he always takes
half of what he gives,
who will be there for you?
Maybe now it’s someone else’s Turn.
Now I feel his poison paralyze me
and I might spend the rest of my life
inside the snake.
But I wonder
where she’ll go
now that she’s free.
