Citizen of Earth

about

Humans forgot calendars. Maybe the Machine knows the date?

Our ancestors made sure that we were well taken care of. How could they know we would be taken care of too well? The machine has perfected care, seeing to every conscious and sub-conscious need we have. Every citizen of Earth wears a helmet that covers his entire head. This is how the machine keeps us happy, by enslaving all five of our senses. We eat, smell, breathe, hear, and see what it deems proper for us. Flashes of jungles and forests, streams and waterfalls, fill us with peace and tranquility. Every morning we eat and work in these beautiful landscapes. The machine wakes us up and takes us everywhere we need to be. The work is easy and fun, nothing to make us feel down.

But we don’t know what the machine knows. Every morning the day crew begins to stack small blocks, one on top of the other. They do this all day in the bliss of ultimately balanced contentment. Once the day shift is over the night crew comes in and does the day crew’s job in reverse. Removing each block from the stack and placing it back into the bins under the tables. The blocks are dirty and smudged by constant touch, but the citizen’s never see them, so their appearance is unimportant. This is all worthless work but the machine knows we need something to do.

lyrics

Citizen wake up!
The line forms at the foot of your bed,
follow your fellow citizens to the dispenser
and take your pill

Citizens to work!
The work forces reports to station 23,
follow your fellow controller,
we know what’s best for humankind

Citizen wake up!
Citizens to work!

Citizen I am made to love and protect you
You’ll never want for anything
for I will keep you safe
I will keep you happy

I will keep you

Citizens begin!
Stack small blocks one on the other
so the night crew can knock them down
Its worthless work but you need to be busy

Citizen line up!
The final head count is at station 23
Back down to the sleeping pods
while the night crew prepares more work
