Imagine the Void

from Citizen by Spiral

/

about

However, after an unknown eternity of generations, one citizen is born with an ages old birth defect – Curiosity. Like everyone else, he loves and worships the great machine, but he senses something is wrong, that somehow the machine is holding him back. At night he stares up into (what he thinks) is the sky and imagines traveling out into the infinite darkness. He rubs his hands over his smooth metallic face and feels the area between it and his neck. After a few years of this he begins to think that maybe his head has too many layers and perhaps one of them – the outermost – is not his own.

It takes him a few years later to actually take his helmet off. Once his raw senses are exposed to the outside world his first response is to try and get it back on, but the damage is done. He can never wear that mask again.

lyrics

Imagine the Void:

Late at night when I’m sleeping,
I dream of worlds beyond the Earth.
My helmet flashes its calming images,
forests and waterfalls meant to help me relax

I imagine the void of space
wrapping me in its cold embrace
I wish I was leaving
I wish I was leaving
I wish I was leaving

Late at night and I’m not sleeping
My helmet cast off in the corner
There’s people all around but no one I’m here
The machine’s stopped looking and I’m free
