Watching You All Go By

from Citizen by Spiral

/

about

Without his helmet he learns the truth. The world is devastated. The ground is covered in filth, human consumption stacked in dark gray piles next to conveyor belts that move long lines of citizens to grubby work cubicles. The citizens live on their small area of conveyor belt, sleeping, standing, and eating in one place. At first he is terrified and disgusted, but slowly, year after year he learns to survive on the leftovers from his fellow citizens. He also discovers, among the piles of trash, thousands and thousands of books, the entire history of his people lying unused and unwanted in mounds of neglect.

A few years later he develops a persistent cough. The air is dark, sooty, and filled with smoke. His old dream is still with him, and he soon finds all the books he needs to teach him the lost art of space flight.

It takes him 23 years to complete Gamelon, the ship that will win him freedom.

lyrics

Watching You All Go By:

Without my helmet
the world is bleak.
The people all lined up,
stretched to the horizon
Mounds of trash at every corner,
provide me with a means of escape.

I’m right here watching you all go by
Building my way to freedom
I’m still right here
climbing and weaving through you
Sorting through trash you never see
and it may be wrong but I have to go

Engines and thrusters plastic and glass
I count my days with scraps of metal
I’m off the grid and out of sight
and soon I’ll be off the planet
